We watch as Bosh’s trajectory changes dramatically as a line’s position is slowly shifted, then as all these possibilities are overlayed in a dazzling array, and then finally as these possibilities rewind, revealing at last that all of this exists only as potential energy in the eye of the sledder. Perhaps they just thought the aesthetic of a ghost trail looked cool? I never imagined this could amount to more than a cheap gimmick, but in A Shiver Sequence Ethan Li takes onion skinning and uses it to express something quite powerful, with the help of some absolutely fantastic post-production. This feature is intended primarily as a tool for constructing tracks, but sometimes creators will leave it on in the final product, for reasons that have never been clear to me. Onion skinning in modern builds of Line Rider is a little different, but follows a similar principle it shows translucent ghost images of frames of Bosh in the past and future, relative to whatever frame Bosh is currently on. As you can imagine, this is very helpful for maintaining proportions and consistent movement speed, among other things.

This work calls into question how we interact with Bosh, less as lines of infuriating code, but more as a character, one we should respect for the journey we share together. Our character, for whom we take our sense of ownership. But this track shows a new angle, the absolute authority the creator has over the fate of our little character on the sled. In one sense it can be argued that the challenge of Line Rider on any level to achieve any outcome is the battle between the creator and the medium, Line Rider not always being the most efficient tool for expression technically or artistically. Bosh seems trapped in suspended animation, reliving all that was, was not, and could have been from 0,0. The track then cuts to black the moment play is hit, choosing to highlight the journey itself as more damning than the final achievement. The final transition from the enlarged dots to Boshes eye shows the never-ending cycle of rinse and repeat, the millions of possibilities considered and discarded in order for the creator to achieve that final finished piece. In these stills we see Bosh in suspended animation, flickering with possibilities but ultimately only at the behest of the creator.Īt 1:55 a cascade of falling sleds and Boshes can be seen it feels almost like the heartbeat of the creative process, or the endless consignment of Boshes that could have been but never were, the endless permutations of possibility. This use of onion skinning and the process of creation via moving lines demonstrates the absolute control the creator has over Bosh. Every scene is a striking self-contained artwork, a beautiful moment in time containing a thousand other possibilities.
